History of Long Beach

Indigenous people have lived in coastal Southern California for over 10,000 years, but the first modern identity for Long Beach began in 1784 when King Carlos III of Spain granted Rancho Los Nietos to Spanish soldier Manuel Nieto. From 1902 to 1910 Long Beach was the fastest-growing city in the United States. In 1929, The Ford Motor Company built a factory here and 12 years later, the U.S. Naval Shipyard dry dock was built to service the nations’ largest naval ships. Along with the construction of a major aircraft facility, these led to Long Beach becoming the prosperous city it is today.
